Description
Every year from time immemorial, the Watchers have assembled in New York City at the twelfth hour on the twelfth day of the twelfth month to await the arrival of the Chosen. For the past thirty years the Chosen have failed to appear. This year is different. However when they do appear outside Macy’s department store–at the threshold between the inner and outer realms–instead of the anticipated twelve, there are only seven. For Rachel Gates, a child of the foster care system, life has not been exactly tragic, but it has been depressingly uneventful. That is until her fifteenth birthday, when she opens her bedroom door to be confronted with a full-length mirror. The mirror yields to the touch and as her curiosity gets the better of her, she finds herself falling through into total blackness. When she regains her senses, she is laying sprawled on the footpath outside of Macy’s with six other teenagers, also foster children celebrating their fifteenth birthdays. The teens are terrified to discover that pedestrians pass right through them, oblivious to their presence. They have passed from the Outer Realm where they have lived their entire lives, into the Inner Realm. Together, the teens are forced to come to terms with a new reality of unique powers and giftings, an unstable tyrant, and each other.
