Description
Ghost Towns of Guadalupe County is about the nearly seventy communities or settlements in Guadalupe County, New Mexico, that have been abandoned or nearly abandoned and are often classified as ghost towns. The author has listed the ghost towns alphabetically and provides a description of each one. In some cases the descriptions are as short as a single paragraph or as long as several pages in length. Photographs and other ephemera are used to illustrate many of the ghost towns. He also includes census information for Guadalupe County from 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930. Several period maps are used to locate many of the ghost towns. Included are two lists of teachers that once worked for the Guadalupe County school system and their school assisgnments. Period newspaper articles, which the author calls "the good, the bad and the whimsical" are included at the end of each ghost town's entry. Many communities have several articles from different state newspapers included. There are even some news articles from out-of-state newspapers which serve to indicate that many of the events drew national attention. The articles are unedited but have been reformatted into the style of the book. The articles provide an important window to the past and are also representative of the style of journalism once used.
