Inhabitants of the Land is a short novel which weaves together a medieval fantasy tale of light and darkness with proverbial and esoteric material drawn from many centuries of Jewish lore. Plot summary: An unnamed sage has a dream in which he is shown a land long forgotten. When he awakens the next morning, he writes down what he has seen. It is the tale of three wicked kings, a wise rabbi, a violent blacksmith, his maniacal apprentice, a mysterious sorceress, a dark witch, and other such inhabitants of this land. Combining the coded, paradoxical, and often cryptic language of Jewish mythological literary style with original characters, the book makes unconventional use of its sources to tell a unique story through the lens of an unorthodox Judaism stripped of any exclusivist, androcentric, and political tendencies. The overall perspective is one which takes seriously the reality of evil and suffering while ultimately offering a picture of restoration.
