Description
Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated the 27th of December 2007, was one of the greatest women of our time. In the Twentieth Century, few women have enjoyed so much popularity, and yet, endured so many cruel accusations. She was chosen, in a sense, by a destiny she would never know how to evade. Descendent of one of Pakistan's most illustrious families, Benazir Bhutto ably followed the example of her ancestors. She was the eldest daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the first democratically elected Prime Minister of Pakistan, and the granddaughter of Shah Nawaz Khan Bhutto who, besides founding the first political party in the province of Sindh, was Prime Minister of the state of Junagadh before the birth of Pakistan in 1947. Mrs. Bhutto herself was elected twice, in 1988 after her marriage with Asif Ali Zardari in 1987, and in 1993, to the post of Prime Minister for Pakistan, thus becoming the first woman to lead an Islamic country. It was a first in the entire Muslim history. Educated in the most prestigious universities abroad-Harvard in the United States and Oxford in England-Mrs. Bhutto was one of the rare people as familiar with Islamic culture as with the culture of the West.
