Virgil W. Peterson, a nationally recognized law-enforcement official. A 1930 graduate of Northwestern University Law School, he was a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 12 years before becoming operating director of the Chicago Crime Commission. He headed the commission until his retirement in 1969 but remained active with it until his death in in 1989 at age 84. He was the author of the book ''Barbarians in our Midst -A History of Chicago Crime and Politics'' in 1952 and ''Mob - 200 Years of Organized Crime in New York,'' in 1983. He was also a founder of the National Association of Citizens Crime Commissions and helped organize crime commissions across the United States.
