When Dr. Jane Kendall's neutrino research project is unexpectedly canceled, she and her employees must find work. Jane has the option of teaching but Mike Grukotsky and Lisa Walker have no prospects. After Mike encounters Major Frank Hicks in a local bar, the major arranges a summer job at a military hospital. And best of all, there is a position for Lisa Walker, as well. Major Hicks has seen video of Lisa's ability to reliably predict the outcome of a coin toss. He thinks this ability could be used in a military context, and perhaps taught to others. He involves Dr. Michael Lee in doing a medical investigation of Lisa's capability. Mike and Lisa find themselves doing menial temporary work on weekdays and reporting to the doctor and the major on Saturdays for various medical scans. Mike still isn't sure about God, but he knows he doesn't like Lisa being treated like an experimental rat, even though she seems willing. When one of the tests turn up an apparent cancer tumor in Mike, Major Hicks arranges for a diagnosis with the head on the hospital Oncology Department. But Mike cannot afford treatment, so the prognosis is uncertain. How will Mike handle the news that his time to consider his questions about God may not be as long as he expected? Can Lisa call the outcome of his condition as she does the flip of a coin?
