On My Way to Someplace Else is a collection of essays I began writing in 1995 when I first discovered that I was a writer. With each essay I came closer to understanding how my parents' experiences had determined my life's direction. The Holocaust certainly figured heavily in--but was not the whole of--the woman I turned out to be. I was a shy, compliant, fearful child and young adult, with a tremendous desire to pierce those boundaries and discover a freer self. The women's movement, friends and role models, and my own drive helped me to move ahead.Â
I'm indebted to authors Faye Moskowitz, Gail Godwin, Vivian Gornick, Liv Ullmann, Peter DeVries, James Kirkwood, Laura Cunningham, Patricia Volk, Erica Jong whose work I read, loved and was inspired by.
