In the Garden

My eyelids flutter, and then open. At first, all I can see is a watery mass of grays and whites. I begin to discern two garbling voices and a shape is starting to form in my blurry vision. A voice emanates from the shape in a disconcertingly joyful tone. “Finally! We thought you’d never become aware, didn’t we Daniel?” “Silence Virgil…you’re frightening her.” “She’s already frightened, Daniel! We all were when we first became aware…” “Aware of what?” My voice is small, but it still manages to cut past the inane chattering of the one called Virgil. Virgil’s hand becomes clear in my sight as he offers it to me. “Sweetie…” His voice is kind as he helps me to my feet. “…you’re dead.” My name is Eve, and this is the story of how I discovered I was ghost.
