Cooper Ray takes us into the world of New York society through the adventures and misadventures of Jake Mender, an uprooted Southerner and a journalist whose columns feature the comings and goings of the New York elite. Much of the book takes place at the "in spot" of the season, Moomba. The book's success is its nasty description of human life in these circles where getting entrance to the right charity ball is as important as finding the right mate, or more so. It is easy to see there is a bit of author K. Cooper Ray in Jake Mender himself. Ray is a thirteenth generation Southern gentleman who has traveled the world and in it has observed the lives of real aristocrats and fashion conscious divas. He maintains the popular SocialPrimer.com, a site that offers sartorial advice and teaches etiquette. He also is a fine clothing designer who for years retailed through Brooks Brothers under the label Social Primer. Ray's sense of the right and wrong menswear comes out in the first chapter of the book when Jake wakes up after a night of debauchery to search for his wallet in a pile of clothes. Only Ray would have a character "feel" his way through nondescript tuxedos to find his own "Ralph Lauren Purple Label." Last Night at Moomba is a must for Social Primer fans, but also is simply a fun read for those who would like to know what the party is like behind the fashionable parties.
