Description

"I Don't Like It, But Maybe I Will When I Grow Up" is a lighthearted alphabet picture book for children of about 3 to 9 years old. The theme of the book is the age-old, parent-child "battle" about eating vegetables. Children will enjoy making fun of the subject and laugh at the suggestions of what they might do with the vegetables instead of eating them.

The book is a collaboration between Naomi McShea and her granddaughter Hannah McShea. When Hannah was about 5 years old, her grandmother offered her a green vegetable at dinner. She said, "I don't like it." After a short silence, in her desire to please her grandmother, Hannah added, "maybe I will when I grow up." The incident inspired Naomi McShea's wonderful alphabet book about vegetables. "I Don't Like It" contains amusing (and accurate) descriptions of the vegetables and offers entertaining suggestions for how they might be used. Hannah, now 16 years old, contributed the drawings. Her "signature" animal, a small charming pig, is the book's main character, enhancing the words of each vegetable story. The author and illustrator know their subject well and both love vegetables!

It wouldn't be surprising if treating the subject of eating-your-vegetables with a little humor leads to at least a few kids taking a bold step ... and trying one or two of them! Who knows!
