The Tongue and Quill: Communication is an Essential Tool for the Twenty-First Century Air Force

The Tongue and Quill is dedicated to every man and woman in today's Air Force who will ever sling ink at paper, pound a keyboard, give a briefing, or staff a package to support the mission. Currently, The Tongue and Quill is widely used by Air Force military and civilian members, professional military school educators and students, and civilian corporations around the United States. What started as a research paper nearly 30 years ago has become the Air Force’s leading reference on writing and speaking. In 1975, then-Air Command and Staff College student Maj. Hank Staley submitted as his research paper the first version of what is now “The Tongue and Quill.” This is the most current edition published by the US Airforce and includes, for example, the latest materials regarding electronic communications and social media approved as of November, 2011. Previous revisions include improved organization of the information, a rearranged layout, updated quotes, art and word lists, and new information on writing and speaking such as persuasive communications, meetings, briefings and electronic communications.
