The Emperor of the Galaxy is used to having things his way so when a group of math savants help one of their own elope with an Imperial Princess, he takes it personally. Unfortunately, it is his mistake to exile them all together. Trying to figure out a way to get free, they happen upon a new technology. And with nothing but time on their hands, they soon develop a way to return and re-unite the couple. And though apolitical, they are confronted by politics on the highest level and problems that dog their every move. They need to find a way to clear their names and get to work on this new technology.
