Description
Have Truck Will Travel tells the story of one man’s futile but dogged determination to keep the wolves from the door by driving trucks for a living. It starts in 1970, just after H.G.V’s first came out and spans right through till the mid eighties, concentrating on life as a General Haulage Driver. They were known in the Trade as “Trampersâ€, and would haul anything for anybody to anywhere, spending weeks on end tramping from one job to another in order to keep the beer money rolling in. Now although the backbone of this book is Trucks, it’s not going to bore you silly with pointless details about how many horse power they are or what size rubbers they’re running on – because it’s all about the Driver. It’s about the loneliness of the open road and not seeing your family or friends for weeks at a time and the marriage problems it causes. It’s about what these so called Knights of the Road get up to on all those nights they spend away from home – never mind what they tell the wife. It’s about how far they’ll sink to get the most lucrative runs and get their hands on that brand new truck the boss just ordered. And it’s about the never ending battle of wits between the Driver and the Transport Manager in order to get one over on each other. So forget about all the scripted rubbish you see on telly – you know the ones who’s makers quite obviously haven’t got a clue which end of a truck the fifth wheel sits on – this is Donkey’s tale. It’s nitty – it’s gritty and it’s raw. But more important than anything– it’s true.
