First published in 1856, Madame Bovary is the masterpiece of Gustave Flaubert. The story of Emma Bovary, who lives beyond her means and indulges in adulterous affairs to escape the boredom of provincial life in XIX century France was initially attacked for obscenity but soon became a pillar of world literature and the inspiration for scores of novelists.
