abc English: Book One

abc English helps adult refugees and immigrants learn both English and basic reading skills. The book is designed specifically for adult students who have had little or no formal education in their native language. The first section of the book teaches basic phonics principles of the English language including alphabet sounds, sounding out words, capital and small letters, and short and long vowels. The second section of the book teaches basic English vocabulary in a series of pattern sentences including sight words, pronouns, question words, numerals and number words, have/want/like/need, and much more. The page layout is designed with emergent readers in mind -- plenty of white space, large fonts, and simple illustrations that focus on the concept at hand. Students will learn basic phonics and reading skills, use authentic basic English vocabulary, and practice pattern sentences that will immediately increase ability to communicate.
