Music Composition: A New Method of Harmony

In this "New Method of Harmony" we have a valuable addition to the already large list of works in this most important department of music culture. At the very outset the author gives a "Vocabulary of chords," consisting of triads, chords of the seventh, of the ninth, of the thirteenth, on every degree of the major and minor scales. The first chapter treats on Elementary form, the divisions and subdivisions of the Period. The work contains many features of excellence not possessed by works of a similar character. The author uses examples taken from the compositions of the masters in illustrating any particular phase of the interesting subject of "Composition." Altered chords are treated in a new and interesting manner. The chapter on Modulation and Transition, while treated in a very satisfactory way, might be more exhaustive. "Style" and the more advanced forma are given a very thorough and interesting treatise. To the musician and music-lover the work will be of great value and will be added with pleasure to the other works written on this important subject, already the possession of one's library.
