This book tells the personal tale of a beginning social worker's first year on Chicago's West Side in the early 1980s. It includes his day-to-day interaction with his remarkable colleagues and with the people of the inner city he served. Of special interest, it describes the lives of those who live in an environment of destitution and in doing so, speaks to the human condition of persons existing at the very edge.
