Mars is Earth's most distant colony, and for good reason. Earth has tried to expand to the outer planets and broaden its colonial realm, but apparent deep psychological problems involving those giants, dubbed "The Jupiter Effect," has blunted any possible success. Now even Mars is breaking away, as its rebel leaders demand independence, and even seem willing to risk hostilities with Earth's formidable military. Skeptics discount any possibility of Martian success as Earth moves quickly to establish control, but this is history's first interplanetary war ever, bringing new problems as "The Jupiter Effect" resurfaces with this new mode of warfare. The urgent need to put down the rebellion and expand beyond it forces a new interest in unraveling these age-old problems, which means undertaking a thorough study of the terrors involved. And thus is born "The Venus Project."
But the subject best suited for this study, and the one they finally pick, is himself a source of far more problems--a man with an odd name, a violent past--and a choice to make. Since he is currently in the second year of a 43-year prison sentence, the leverage Earth has on him, with his unique talents, is enormous. But when it all comes to the critical stage can he be counted on to cooperate? Or does he have a secret agenda and a dream of his own?
When the opportunity comes and he makes his choice, he is swept up in the events--an epic journey that not only takes him into war, but far beyond.
