Transitioning to the Common Core State Standards

The state of Maryland has adopted the Common Core standards. These standards describe what students are expected to know. In 2013-2014, students will be instructed based on these standards and the MSA Reading test will reflect these new standards.

The questions in this book have been developed to reflect the changes in the standards. There is a stronger focus on close reading, using evidence from text, analyzing and evaluating texts, and the questions are more difficult than in the past. The questions cover skills in both the State Curriculum and the new Common Core State Standards. This will introduce students to the new skills, help students transition to the more challenging Common Core standards, and ensure that students are fully prepared for the MSA Reading test.
