Description
In the spring of 1944, during World War II, my grandfather, William Adolf Genzer was drafted into the United States Army. He was first stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, and subsequently at the Quartermaster General’s office of the War Department in Washington, D.C. During the months when he was away from his wife, Sarah Ann Quattlebaum Genzer - known as Baby Ann to her entire family - she wrote to him almost every day, until she was able to join him in Washington, D.C. with their first child, Carol Ann, my mother. This book is a compilation of those letters, as well as others from their family during this separation. Baby Ann’s personality comes through loud and clear in her letters – so funny at times, a little nagging at other times - but always loving and devoted. Historically, these letters provide a joyful look at family life during the latter part of World War II. But more importantly, they provide a personal and intimate insight into a wonderful relationship – a marriage and love affair that lasted 72 years.
