Monsignor

"Monsignor" his parishioners addressed the young priest with the title he will truly earn many years later. With fiery idealism and imbued with the highest Christian principles, he endeavors to change his poor parish for the better. He comes to realize that he cannot. Chastened, smoking too much. and questioning God, he eagerly accepts a transfer to a wealthy parish where he faithfully carries out his duties. However, he discovers that financial resources can be used opportunely, and in the classic American entrepreneurial tradition, he pursues an expansionist agenda that brings his parish church to unprecedented heights. In the end, he is forced to recognize that certain character traits lay dormant within him all along, and - a sick and humbled man - he turns back to God.
