Excerpt

Before you can cast a spell for wealth and prosperity, you must first banish poverty by creating a feeling of abundance within yourself to remove any trace of wistful wanting. (see Chapter 6). The story of the Candy Tree is a perfect example of how to do this.

THE CANDY TREE

"My father grew up during the Great Depression of the 1930's. His parents and eight brothers and sisters lived on a broken down houseboat on the Green River in western Kentucky. They fed themselves by hunting and trapping game along its shores. Life was a constant struggle on that old boat. It was always damp and dreary and just one one bucket load of water away from sinking. Even the smallest children took turns bailing it out. He grew up with some pretty bad memories, but there were some good ones, too. One of his favorites was the time his father planted a candy tree!

My grandfather had no money to buy candy to fill Easter baskets for his nine children. He barely had enough to buy chewing gum and a few packages of Life Savers. But one Spring, just before Easter Sunday, he got an idea! Gathering his children around him, he told them the story of the first Easter. Then he told them a secret!

"The earth contains hallowed magic on Easter Eve," he whispered to his wide-eyed brood. Then he told them that if they planted a piece of candy in the ground on the night before Easter Sunday, and if they were very good, and wished very hard, then maybe, just maybe, that piece of candy would sprout into a candy tree on Easter morning! So, on a cold Kentucky evening in early Spring, with their shabby houseboat tied to a tree in the river behind them, nine children stood in a circle around a muddy mound of dirt. The oldest child planted a Life Saver in the ground, and the youngest child watered it, then each got a Life Saver before climbing back on the boat. The children went to bed in their little hammocks thinking about nothing but that candy tree. Easter bunnies and baskets with chocolate marshmallow eggs were the furthest things from their minds. The older children were a bit skeptical, of course, but the younger ones' hearts were filled with excitement and anticipation. They could hardly wait for morning.

That night my grandfather stayed up long after midnight tying dozens of little Life Saver candies to the branches of a small dogwood tree. After adding a few pieces of chewing gum sticks for good measure, he replanted the tree in the exact same spot where the children had planted the Life Saver earlier. The next morning, the first thing the children did was run to see if their candy tree had grown up over night. And there it was! They couldn't take their eyes off of the beautiful little Dogwood tree whose branches were laden not only with Dogwood blossoms, but with multicolored Life Savers and chewing gum. I can tell you that those children could not have cared less about expensive Easter baskets after that. As they harvested their "crops", every single one of them felt rich, indeed!

To generate that kind of positive feeling, especially for children, is powerful magic. My father and his siblings survived the depression and grew up to become successful entrepreneurs, and the story of the candy tree became a family legend that will be passed down through generations, an enduring lesson in how to banish poverty."
