St. James Guide to Native North American Artists Edition 1.

Patterned after St. James' award-winning Contemporary Artists,St. James Guide to Native North American Artists profiles 400 prominent artists of the twentieth century. Established and new artists from the U.S. and Canada will be included, as well as major figures who worked at the turn of the century.

Native North American Artists features craftspeople in the visual arts, including painting, architecture, basketry, beadwork, carving, drawing, intallation, jewelry, masks, photography, pottery, printmaking, sculpture, performance art, mixed media and textiles.

Each entry provides a biographical profile; lists individual and group exhibitions, public galleries and museums with works by the artist in permanent collections; includes a bibliography of books and articles by and about the entrant; and presents an authoritative critical perspective on the artist's work written by a specialist. To help readers appreciate the artist's contributions to culture, a representative photograph and artist statement often complements entries.

An introduction by noted scholar W. Jackson Rushing and a guest foreword by Richard W. Hill, Sr., artist, museum director and Native art advocate provide context for appreciating the art and artists profiled.
