D. C. Rider

Many Americans have never fathomed the idea of a United States without all of the modern conveniences we take for granted, such as electricity, running water, and motorized transportation. Richard Cortland Harrison has envisioned this life and in his new book, "DC Rider," he takes us on a detailed fictitious journey of what we could expect such a life to be like. "DC Rider" follows the life of a man named Buck Buckley. After years of inflation and wasteful energy consumption, Buckley wakes up to a world the likes of which he has never seen, an America whose major functions have shut down completely. There is no electricity, banks have closed, the nation's food supplies are low, all of which in its turn creates a ruthless and savage nation. Trying to find a way out of the "great catastrophe," he heads north by bus until the bus runs out of gas in Pennsylvania, signaling the end of the old life and the start of a new one for Buck Buckley. After spending several years on an Amish farm and learning how to use and depend on nature, Buck sets out west to start his own farm. Before reaching his destination, he is drawn back to his hometown of Washington, DC, a city now in shambles. The government is still intact and functioning, but its job is made almost impossible due to the loss of communication with its citizens. Feeling compassion for his hometown, he begins his adventure of trying to bring the torn community together. Buck encounters opposition in a variety of forms, but he alone perseveres and fights the battle to restore freedom to a broken nation. Harrison does a wonderful job of painting a picture of this world in the mind of the reader. His descriptive narration is superb, and he adds a little something for everyone. There is action, murder, romance, and humor, all of which make the book a remarkably good and compelling read.
