How prevalent is depression? A few years ago, the surgeon general called major depression an "epidemic" in America. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), about 20.9 million American adults, or about 9.5 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given, have a mood disorder (which includes the three major types of depressive disorder). The World Health Organization (WHO) has found that major depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide among person aged 15-44 years old.
