Tristan Jones has written more than just another war novel. The story is highlighted by a galaxy of unforgettable characters. Humor is there, too, macabre and chilling at times, but totally believable under the circumstances. And finally-like a thread of gossamer winding through this glowing fabric-there is a note of tenderness and compassion in the form of the Beatrice Maud, a sailing vessel whose actual participation in the Dunkirk evacuation touched upon the lives of many people.
