Description

Many scholarly books have been written and published about President Eisenhower's military career and his presidency. This is not one of those books. This book is about the Eisenhower farm located just outside of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It's an easy-to-read work turned out by a local farmer from Gettysburg with the help of his daughter. In 1950, then retired General Dwight D. Eisenhower purchased a 189-acre farm just south of Gettysburg. Neighboring farmers watched with interest as the new owner successfully ran for President of the United States shortly after the purchase. One of those interested nearby neighbors was now-retired farmer, Stanley R. Wolf. As part of the local agricultural community in the 50's, Wolf knew quite a bit about the operation of the farm, purchase of adjoining farms and Ike's standing in the community. He realized that there had been many books written about Ike's military career and political career, but little written about the farm in Gettysburg. Stan asked his daughter, Audrey Weiland, also of Gettysburg, if she would help him put his stories about the Eisenhower farm on paper and their five-year collaboration has finally resulted in the book: Ike - Gettysburg's Gentleman Farmer. Along with 24 photos, some never before published, the book includes answers to such questions as: Why did Ike purchase a farm in Gettysburg?; How much did Ike pay for the farm?; Who managed the farm for Ike?; and many more details about the farming operation at the Eisenhower farm from the 50's through the 60's and today.
