Connie Mitchell is excited about beginning her teaching career in the small town of Melville, Iowa in 1938. She meets a handsome, personable, young man, Jackson Clark. Connie is mystified because of the way the community treats her and Jack’s indifference. His talented piano playing, his work at the school, store, playing for his dance band, and fixing various electrical equipment to support his confused mother and six younger sibling, causes her to admire him in spite of the way he treats her. She tries to hide this from him. The story takes you through Connie’s Year of teaching–enhances by true stories of amusing teacher-children experiences and small-town happenings. Connie’s faith in God deepens. Jack has lost his. Connie tries to show him God still cares about him, but he can’t accept that. It is the last day of school, and jack asked her to leave. The community has changed–they want her to stay. What should she do?
