Breakfast in Bombay is a wry and witty tale that tips its hat to Howard Marks’ Mr. Nice and Gregory David Roberts’ Shantaram, and with more than a mere nod to Midnight Express. Max, an ordinary North Londoner who had chosen the life of a modern-day nomad as an alternative to one that surely meant drowning in hopeless mediocrity, is going to gobble up 117 Indian government-issued, cannabis-stuffed condoms for breakfast. He had been aimlessly drifting through India when he met Brandon, a veteran drug smuggler with a character that intrigues and attracts him from the start. Such is Brandon’s influence over him that he convinces him to join him on his next smuggling project and together they embark on an adventure that subsequently changes the way Max sees India, himself and the relationship between success and failure forever. The humorous narrative takes us on a tour of central and southern India, describing all the obstacles that this wonderful yet complex country places in their path, permitting us to follow step by step Max and Brandon’s careful preparations for their flight booked from Bombay to London’s Heathrow. On their travels around the continent the two friends share adventures that range from the sublime to the ridiculous thanks to their encounters with a mishmash of colourful and eccentric characters.
