The Drive for Equality: A Personal History of Civil Rights Enforcement: 1954-1965

This is the story of one person's work during ten years in the U.S. Department of Justice enforcing federal law mandating equal treatment of citizens under the law. Mr. Barrett was at the front of much of the action. He describes his connection with the attendance of the "Little Rock nine" in Central High School in 1957, the trial of the first voting rights case filed under the Civil Rights Act of 1957, the desegregation of the public schools in New Orleans in 1960, the Biloxi Beach riot in 1960, the desegregation of bus carriers and terminals by the ICC in 1961, the entry of James Meredith into Ole Miss in 1962, and the murder of Viola Liuzzo in Alabama in 1965.
