"Irrigation is the controlled application of water to croplands. Its primary objective is to create an optimal soil moisture regime for maximizing crop production and quality while at the same time minimizing the environmental degradation inherent in irrigation of agricultural lands. Besides minimizing the use of irrigation water by adopting canal linings, sprinkler irrigation and microirrigation techniques such as drip irrigation on a large scale, additional waters are still required to be stored for bringing additional cropped area under irrigation to increase our food and fibre production, to fulfill our growing demands for ever increasing population.
