He was still frowning. “How many of these man-eating lions are there?” he asked.“When were the lions here?” asked the big game ranger hurriedly.“They have just gone,” replied one of the villagers. “One was limping.”“Why was he limping?” asked the game ranger.“He was limping because of the stones we threw. We hit one on the leg, and hurt him. We hurt his hind leg.”“Where did they go?” asked the ranger.“There,” replied the villager, and he pointed towards some trees at the edge of the village.“Come on,” said the game ranger to Jeff. They hurriedly picked up their guns. “You must do exactly what I tell you to do. These lions will be very dangerous .................... They are man-eaters; one is wounded and is limping. You must stand still when I tell you to stand still. You must stand still, and you mustn’t move. You mustn’t shoot unless I tell you to shoot. Do you understand?”“Yes,” replied Jeff, “I’ll stand still when you tell me to stand still, and I won’t shoot unless you tell me to shoot.”When evening came, the lions began to get hungry. “Well, Cub,” said the lioness, “Let’s go and get some meat. If we go now, we might find some food. We might find an impala or a zebra. Come on! Are you coming, Hippo?”Hippo thought that he might not like meat because he usually ate grass and roots. Then he thought, “If I’m going to stay with the lions, I ought to learn to eat meat.”So hippo and the lioness and her cubs went off into the bush. Soon, the lioness saw an antelope in the distance.“Be quiet,” she said. “We must try to move quietly.” They moved quietly until they saw the antelope. Hippo wanted to help his friends and he tried to do exactly what they did. He watched the lioness as she crawled through the bush. He saw the cubs get down and crawl. So he tried getting down and crawl. But he was very fat, and when he tried to get down he fell down with a loud crash.“Be quiet, Hippo,” said the lioness. “Stay there and don’t move.”Hippo watched the lions as they crawled behind the antelope. He saw the lioness prepare herself to jump. He began to get excited and his feet kept moving. The lioness was very close to the antelope who still hadn’t noticed her. Then, when the lioness was about to jump, Hippos foot slid on a piece of grass and he cashed to the ground.When evening came, the lions began to get hungry. “Well, Cub,” said the lioness, “Let’s go and get some meat.
