Description
The aim of this thesis is to `examine the development of constructed cult loci from the late Iron Age to the late Roman period in Southern Britain'. Smith concludes that such sites were rare during the late Iron Age but became more widespread during the Roman period. This is possibly because they became `integral parts of the political, commercial, social and ideological world of those that surrounded them'. The study is based on a series of case studies, including sites at Stanegrove Hill in Harlow, Essex, South Cadbury, Thetford in Norfolk and Brigstock in Northamptonshire. Also includes an illustrated gazetteer of 98 sites.
