Particles in water play an important role in all kinds of water quality and treatment issues, sometimes positive, often not, and the removal of particulates is a crucial step in water and wastewater treatment. To understand particle behaviour so as to develop efficient treatment facilities a far better characterisation of particles in water is needed than was formerly available. In the last two decades considerable and continuing progress has been made in our knowledge of matter in the micro-particle size range, with significant developments in treatment technology as a result. However this is still a very active field of research and recently awareness of the influence of fine colloidal matter on water quality and particle separation processes has drawn attention of researchers to the realm of nano-particles. To share the latest research and developments many of the world?s leading experts came to the Zurich conference and from a very high-quality programme 41 papers were selected following peer review for these proceedings. They cover the fundamentals of particle characterization and transformation, particle removal concepts, coagulation and flocculation, and membrane technology.
