Drawing primarily from research in South Asia, the book highlights the growing importance of off-farm diversification in sustaining smallholder agriculture and in determining the character of village production relations and emerging class formation. The book goes on to show that an understanding of this process is an essential pre-requisite to any form of responsive intervention by the state.
