Statistics confirm a general picture in which Black pupils have disproportionately low attainment in examinations and disproportionately high exclusion rates and statements of special educational needs. But it is not always so, and it need not be. Some do well in that school and go on to achieve academic success. Here, Jasmine Rhamie presents the powerful and revealing stories of young people who have succeeded in their particular situations. Through their own accounts of their school experiences, we see how the influence of family, friends and the community can enable them to succeed against the odds.
