During World War II, the great majority of sunken Allied vessels were sent to the bottom of the sea by a relatively small number of German submarines. This fascinating study of Nazi U-boats examines the training of German submariners, and their daily life at sea and in port. Also discussed are typical duties and the organization of all ranks and branches. A selection of photos from the author's archives complement detailed accounts of specific patrols and crews. The author also studies the phenomenon of the submarine "ace", drawing all information from original logbooks.
