Understanding Architecture: Its Elements, History and Meaning

This survey of western architecture is divided into two parts. The first deals with the basic properties of architecture, examining a building's structure, aesthetic appeal and place in the environment. The second is a chronological survey of western architectural development against a social, cultural and economic background, from prehistoric times to the present.
