Arrowtown: History & Walks

A town born of gold, nestled at the foot of the mountains of western Otago, Arrowtown has retained much of its goldfields character. Large numbers of historic buildings, from the imposing Bank of New Zealand to the tiny stone huts of Chinese miners, make this one of the country's most picturesque places. It is a small wonder that it is on the "must-see" list of almost every visitor to Central Otago. Less well-known are the tussock-covered hills and gullies north of Arrowtown. They offer the visitor a chance to ramble for miles, exploring gold-mining sites and relics. This book describes the natural history of the area, the geology that gave rise to the gold and scheelite mining industries, and outlines the town's history.
