It's 650 years in the future and everyone is subject to MINDSET, a brainwashing, personality-conforming mental indoctrination that keeps the people of post-apocolypse Wisconsin in line and mindlessly doing their assigned duties. Everyone, that is, except Mario Rizzo, who has traveled through time all the way back from 1999.

Rizzo finds himself in a fight for his identity and for his life. The confusion and fear are diminished somewhat by discovering a fellow time traveler from Chicago named Mark. Genuine help comes in the comely form of Resa, a beautiful MINDSET woman, whose mind hasn't quite been set to the satisfaction of the DEFENDERS, the highly-programmed men charged with keeping order.

Just as the confusion and dispair starts evolving into acceptance and Mario and Resa seem to be heading for romance, Mark is murdered by a ruthless Defender and Mario awakes from an accident-induced coma. He's suddenly back to 1999.

Mario rejoins his old life, his old ways, his wife, his family and job. But, the future just won't roll over and play dead! He desperately seeks relief from the inner torments of having visited the future - in his job, his family, the bottle, pills and therapy.

Just as he is about to melt down, FATE intervents and sends him back to the future and a new life he barely understands.
