The protagonist of this memoir is a young Danish girl living through the German occupation of Denmark as a three-to-eight-year old. A daughter of Danish missionaries she moves to Aden, Arabia, as a teen-ager. There she is an outsider in an exotic world where her parents are persecuted. Her experiences shape her future. As she returns to Denmark she falls prey to depression, questions her parents' beliefs and mission, experiences an unwanted pregnancy, and grapples with her brother's schizophrenia. She triumphs after struggling through medical school as a wife and mother.
