Letters Home: A Reflection of a Man's Survival

Between 1942-1945, 1st LT. USAAC Maxwell M Andler found himself struggling to survive as a POW in Japanese custody in the Phillippines and later Japan, with little food or clothing and no word from the outside world. Although professionally trained as a Neurosurgeon in the States, LT. Andler encountered a world far different than he could ever imagine in his worst nightmares. These letters to his family became his lifeline to his sanity while he was forced to live in the brutal conditions of prison camp during wartime. His words reflect the courage and humanity Dr. Andler later displayed in his medical practice in Los Angeles.
