The Marriage Registers of Upper Canada, Volume 3: Huron District 1841-1870. (Marriage Registers of Upper Canada/Canada West)

The Huron District was created by legislation in March of 1838 but was not proclaimed until October of 1841 once the court house and jail were erected in Goderich. Marriage returns for Huron County, Perth County, Bruce County and the western portion of Grey County and McKillop and Williams Townships were submitted to the Clerk of Peace in the District town of Goderich. In May 1849 the Huron District was abolished but clergy in the United Counties of Huron, Bruce and Perth County continued to send marriage returns to the clerk of the peace. The surviving Huron District Marriage Register abruptly ends in 1848. All Baptisms and Burials sent to the Clerk of the Peace for the Huron District and later the United Counties of Bruce and Huron are also included! In 1853 the clerk for Perth County created a separate marriage register, consequently all marriages (baptisms and burials) performed in Perth County from 1852 onwards are not part of the Huron District Marriage Register. All marriages performed before the Huron District was proclaimed in 1841 were sent to the Clerk of the Peace for the London District and can be found in the London District Marriage Register 1795-1841 (Volume 4 Part 1). Townships included in the Huron District: Arran, Brant, Bruce, Carrick, Culross, Elderslie, Greenock Huron, Kincardine, Kinloss and Saugeen (all part of Bruce County), Ashfield, Biddulph, Colborne, Goderich, Grey, Hay, Howick, Hullet, McGillivrary, McKillop, Morris, Stanley, Stephen, Tuckersmith, Turnberry, Usborne, and Wawanosh (all part of Huron County), Blanshard, Downie, Easthope North, Easthope South, Ellice, Elma, Fullerton, Gore of Downie, Hibbert, Logan, Mornington and Wallace (all part of Perth County) and Williams Township which is part of Middlesex County. Includes Huron District Marriage Register and all Baptism, Marriage & Burial returns from clergy for the Huron District and the United Counties of Bruce and Huron
