Description
In recent years the Doctrine of the Trinity has been examined by scholars and theologians perhaps as never before. Historians have also focused upon the introduction of this doctrine into the Church in the fourth century and have been surprised to find that it owed its existence, not to the teaching of Jesus Christ or his Apostles, but to Greek philosophical reasoning. The ideas that developed into the Doctrine of the Trinity were debated vigorously, even fiercely and violently during the period between the Council of Nicea in A D 325 and the Second Council of Constantinople held in 381. The doctrine was not in fact introduced by the unanimous consent of the Bishops, either at Nicea or Constantinople, but was imposed upon the Church by an act of imperial coercion. The decree of the Emperor Theodosius recognised only those who followed this new law as orthodox Christians, whereas all others were branded as heretics. In this way freedom of thought and expression were suppressed, but this development created numerous theological problems which have never been resolved.
