Gills Wonderground map of London Town, 1914

British architect and artist, MacDonald Gill, was commissioned to create a poster-sized map of central London  prominently featuring the city's numerous new "Tube" stations. Gill's cartoon-styled map was part of a finely tuned advertising campaign promoting the concept of easy access by public transport to all the marvels of the bourgeoning metropolis. Gill's map launched a clearly identifiable genre and marked a resurgence of decorative mapmaking that lasted throughout the century and beyond.
