Blood and Guts: a Nurse's Story

You sit across from the doctor who is wearing a smart suit and reading a file. He closes it and places his folded hands with their manicured fingers on top. He looks over his bifocals and announces in measured tones that you have a tumour growing in your body. While you sit there in stunned silence, he adds that it is cancerous and that you will need to have an operation, without which you only have a certain amount of time to live. The next time you see him, he wears a surgical suit and a mask. You can only see his eyes as he tells you where he intends to make his cut. You look around the Anaesthic room at his companions, all dressed in the same outfits. Everything seems surreal and you feel like a rabbit caught in the headlights. Who are these people into whose hands you are entrusting your life?
