People are celebrating in Kings Cross on Melbourne Cup night but in the back of the pawnbroker's shop a violent argument is raging. When the pawnbroker is found dead the next morning with a severed spinal cord John Sentinel and his team are assigned to the case. They find there are many people who disliked him and wished him dead. With the new criminal elements coming into the Cross, their job is intriguing and dangerous.
