Description
Nicole Krauss is one of a group of leading edge writers in the U.S. She has written three novels to date and this guide combines two: The History of Love and Great House,/b> into a single discussion of her fiction.
The History of Love is the story of Leo, now in his 80s, who once upon a time ago wrote a book about love for the love of his life, Alma. His original story wound its way around the world, from the Holocaust era in Europe through South America, ending in the U.S. where a young fourteen year-old girl was serendipitously named Alma in honor of Leo s Alma. The elderly Leo, now alone and lonely, had long ago lost track of his book and those he once loved. The young Alma also has losses that she is trying to resolve. Krauss uses the two arcing stories to look at the many layers and meanings of love in an effort to describe this elusive emotion, and to make the world a little less lonely for all of us.
Great House is a darker look at love through the loss of love. The four separate narrators Nadia, Arthur, Aaron and Isabel are tenuously linked through a very large, wooden desk that passes through each of their lives in dramatic fashion. We follow the desk, and the characters, backwards through their individual histories to see the role that loss played in each of their lives. Krauss uses the inheritance of the desk to probe the legacy that loss brings and leaves in a person s present and, possibly, future life.
Bookclub-in-a-Box is pleased to combine the two Nicole Krauss novels into a single discussion guide to provide an in-depth look at the literary accomplishments of this fantastic writer.
Every Bookclub-in-a-Box discussion guide includes complete coverage of the themes and symbols, writing style and interesting background information on the novel and the author, as well as a complementary RAG (Read-Along-Guide), a quick reference pamphlet offering interesting facts and questions to consider while reading the novel.
