Modal is in the first of Charles L. Fontenay's Tales of the Modals. Set in a stark and primitive future where climatic change and techtonic shift have rendered unsustainable most of the technological advances of twentieth century civilaization, a few people try to use the discipline of the martial arts and the theory of Multiple Intelligences to create a new sort of a leader--The Modal.
