Xiao Hong (1911-1942) was a writer of essays, fiction, and poetry and is widely considered to be China's first feminist novelist. Her fiction “Field of Life and Death†depicted the tragedy of the farmers in the northeast China, truly reflected the bloody reality of old society in that special period. “Tales of Hulan River†focused on her hometown in Hulan and depicted its people still suffering from their feudal heritage. The novel evokes domestic images and observes village stage performances, exorcist rites and festivals.
